Chepkirui Wins Her Second New York City Marathon Title; Almgren Wins the Men's Race in His Debut
Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui pulled away from defending champion Hellen Obiri in the final 150 meters to win in 2:24:36, while Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the men's race in 2:06:01 — the third-fastest time in the race's 50-year history.

Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the New York City Marathon for the second time on Sunday, pulling away from defending champion Hellen Obiri in the final 150 meters to finish in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 36 seconds, Reuters reported.
American Jessica McClain surged past Obiri in the final strides to take second in 2:24:42 — the first time a U.S. woman has finished in the top three since 2018 — with Obiri third. Chepkirui, who also won the race in 2024, sealed the victory only in the closing stretch after Obiri had shadowed her through the final miles.
The men's race went to a debutant. Sweden's Andreas Almgren won in 2:06:01 in his first marathon — the third-fastest time in the event's 50-year history and the first win by a European man in three decades — after pulling away from defending champion Benson Kipruto with about a mile to go. Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa was second, 13 seconds back, Lesotho's Kamohelo Mofolo third in 2:06:26 and Kipruto fourth; American Zouhair Talbi was sixth with the fastest time ever run by a U.S. athlete in the event.
In the wheelchair races, Switzerland's Marcel Hug won his eighth New York title in 1:28:14, about a second ahead of Daniel Romanchuk, and fellow Swiss Catherine Debrunner won the women's race in 1:40:02. About 60,000 competitors took part in the 50th running of the race.
