Newark Traffic: Turnpike Western Spur Southbound Backs Up for 3 Miles Through Newark on Sunday Evening (Newark Brick City News)

Drivers heading south on the New Jersey Turnpike's Western Spur through Newark faced a 3-mile delay on Sunday evening, according to the NJDOT 511NJ incident feed read by this desk. The Turnpike Authority reported delays southbound from south of Interchange 16W (Route 3, Lyndhurst) to south of Interchange 15W (I-280, Newark), with all lanes open, in an update posted at 5:34 p.m. Eastern.

The slowdowns were not limited to the Western Spur. The same feed reported a delay of about a mile and a half on the Turnpike's Eastern Spur southbound from Interchange 18E toward south of Interchange 15X in Secaucus, all lanes open, and Holland Tunnel travel times of 20 to 25 minutes eastbound from Turnpike Exit 14C and from Route 139 at the Tonnelle Circle, in updates posted Sunday evening.

No crash or full closure inside Newark or Essex County appeared in the feed this cycle, and the earlier northbound Western Spur crash north of Interchange 15E that this station reported in the afternoon did not appear among the feed's current Newark items. The feed also listed a special event in Harrison — a Gotham FC soccer match at Sports Illustrated Stadium running until 7 p.m. — among the items drivers in the area may encounter on Sunday evening.
