The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in downtown Newark offers two very different programs on Sunday, Nov. 1, starting with One Community, Many Rhythms, a community engagement dance program at 3 p.m., according to NJPAC's published calendar.

The evening program, at 6 p.m., is Mariza with special guests Derek Gripper and Duo Andalus, listed by NJPAC under world music. Mariza is the Portuguese fado singer whose bittersweet balladry carried her from local stages in Portugal to international tours, and the Sunday bill pairs her with Gripper and Duo Andalus as special guests, according to the venue listings read this cycle.

Across town the same afternoon, the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies presents the David Berkman Sextet at Clement's Place, 15 Washington Street, from 3 to 5 p.m., a free-listed afternoon of modern jazz led by pianist and composer David Berkman, according to the event listing.

NJPAC, at 1 Center Street, is among the largest performing arts centers in the United States and Newark's anchor cultural institution. Its November calendar continues Tuesday and Wednesday with the A.R. Rahman Symphonic Experience with the New Jersey Symphony, before the TD James Moody Jazz Festival opens Nov. 6.
