Newark School Applications Are Open Through Jan. 15 After Families Packed the All Schools Fair (Newark Brick City News)

Families filled Newark Vocational High School on a recent Saturday for the district's All Schools Fair, the first day students could apply to schools for the 2027-28 school year, according to Chalkbeat Newark's reporting on the fair. Teachers and school staff pitched their schools in hallways that resembled a street market as parents compared options for their children.

The Newark Public Schools enrollment process opened on Oct. 24, 2026, and the application window closes at midnight on Jan. 15, 2027, according to Chalkbeat's reporting of the district timeline. From now through mid-January, students can tour schools and attend open houses, and students will find out their results on March 22, according to the district website cited in the reporting.

Newark once operated a universal enrollment system for both district-run and charter schools, but many of the city's charter schools now use a separate application called the Newark Common App, according to the reporting — a distinction families weighing both sectors need to keep in mind before the January deadline.

Among the families at the fair were newcomers to the city comparing district schools, and parents with children in charter schools who were looking to switch, according to the reporting.
