Turnpike Outer Roadway Closes Overnight at Interchange 14 Starting Tonight, With More Night Work All Week
Barrier repairs close the southbound Outer Roadway between Interchange 14 and Interchange 6 on four nights this week, and the northbound Outer Roadway closes outright on Election Night — plan the late drive before you leave.

Overnight work on the New Jersey Turnpike at Newark's doorstep starts tonight. NJDOT's 511NJ service reports barrier repairs, construction and sweeping closing all lanes of the Turnpike Outer Roadway southbound between north of Interchange 14 — the I-78 and U.S. 1&9 interchange in Newark — and north of Interchange 6, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights through Saturday morning, Nov. 7.
Election Night brings the bigger closure: line striping, milling and paving close all lanes of the Outer Roadway northbound between the Inner/Outer Roadway split in Mansfield Township and the Southern Mixing Bowl in Newark from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, and the Inner Roadway northbound closes for striping on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights in the same window. Late-night drivers heading south from Newark should expect to be funneled onto the Inner Roadway or off the Turnpike entirely.
Also on the board: the U.S. 1&9 northbound express lane closes Saturday, Nov. 7, between I-78 in Newark and south of the Pulaski Skyway truck route, and the Pulaski Skyway northbound right lane closes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12 and Friday, Nov. 13. Closer to the moment, crews were handling debris on the Turnpike Eastern Spur northbound south of Interchange 15X in Kearny on Monday afternoon, with the left shoulder blocked as of 1:45 p.m.
The long-running Port Street truck restriction in Newark remains in force. Drivers heading for Newark Liberty, the port or the Interchange 14 ramps after 8 p.m. this week should check 511NJ before leaving and allow extra time.
